A large antique explorers style Singer's Patent compass by Francis Barker, London c1870

Singer’s Patent compass having 2½" hand drawn floating dry card with Singer’s Patent rose, showing Singer’s trademark lyre and star, further marked with cardinals and intercardinals, suspended on a gemstone bearing. The card verso balanced with sealing wax. Contained within a drum-form case with push-on lid, flat glass with sprung retainer.

Rolled case retaining much of its original lacquer, marks consistent with age and use; card with good condition, with few signs of ageing. The compass swings nicely, easily finding north.

A very good example of these desirable compasses, surviving in above average and original condition. The dial identical to the higher numbered Singer’s Patent cards, indicating that this was manufactured very shortly after the expiration of Samuel Berry Singer's patent in 1868. The card formed of an old ledger page, this recycling very typical of Francis Barker, and balanced with sealing wax.

A good collector’s piece and a super gift.
